This bespoke side table is made of walnut stained poplar. It was designed to fit in a very specific location. It has a lower shelf, a side drawer swings open, a board pulls out the front as a cup holder, and we incorporated an outlet with USB ports. Not only does this customer get a one of a kind piece, they get exactly what they want, at the best bang for their buck, which incorporates the highest functionality possible. It’s a win, win, win. These ash, end grain, butcher block cutting boards are incredibly durable. The end grain allows the wood fibers to absorb the impact of the knife during cutting or chopping, which protects the board from getting as many scratches and gouges. These boards also have a built-in moat to catch juices, and handles notched into the sides for ease of transport.
Not only are they highly functional, they are absolutely gorgeous.

A customer wanted to develop this space in their home for a number of years and had envisioned a bench to occupy it. We worked closely together on design, initially designing a movable, rectangular, storage bench, and then finally deciding that a built-in, custom, wall bench would work best within that space. We incorporating a work around for a section of brick wall, and were also able to give a few variations of panel and lid layouts to optimize appeal and functionality. We collectively decided that the best finish would be to paint the bench to match the existing back wall and kitchen.

This two lidded built-in bench is a wonderful addition. It truly completes the allure of the space our customer created. To make the appeal of this bench even greater, we added functionality by transferring two electrical outlets from the back wall to two USB capable outlets built in to the front of the bench. We also were able to accommodate a sconce light above the bench. Lastly the lids were fitted with soft close lid supports to alleviate noise and lid abuse over the years.

We, here at Krafka Kraft took the afternoon off last Friday to bike downtown and attend the #iowacityclimatestrike. We were so proud to be two in thousands of people who gathered to speak out on behalf of this planet we call home. We cannot thank @gretathunberg enough for helping unite us in this cause. We at Krafka Kraft do our best to keep our small business sustainably and locally sourced as well as low on emissions. This means making sure our wood is sustainably harvested from local Iowa hardwoods. It means only taking what we need and no more. It means only using the energy to make what needs to be made. It means working through the cold in winter and the heat in summer, only using the AC and furnace when absolutely necessary. And it means biking into work whenever possible.
We make sacrifices because we believe the world is worth it. We do what we can, but we can always do better. Change is coming. Let’s be a part of it.
